Today marks both a beginning and an end for Desert Mountain. Today is the kick off of the 2016 Charles Schwab Cup tournament at Desert Mountain. The Schwab Cup has been played at Desert Mountain for several years and the players are always very complimentary about the exceptional greens and facilities at Desert Mountain. This is however, the last year in the foreseeable future that the Schwab Cup will be held at Desert Mountain. The PGA has selected The Phoenix Country Club to host the 2017 and 2018 Schwab Cup. Next year’s event will be held November 6-12 at the Phoenix Country Club in mid-town Phoenix.
Desert Mountain members have enjoyed hosting the event in previous years, however, it is a big commitment from both the club and members. The road blocks have been up all week in the community. There is usually additional guards at the entrance to every village. Traffic generally crawls through the community for a week. The tournament is both an honor and an inconvenience to members and homeowners. Many members do not like the general public being allowed into the community for the tournament. There has been a growing sentiment in the community that the time has come to say good-bye to the Schwab Cup.
