The History of Desert Mountain

March 5, 2015 by Carmen Brodeur

Desert Mountain wasn’t always a land of well-manicured landscapes and world-class golf courses. In fact, its wild terrain was first settled in 700A.D. by the Hohokam people.Desert Mountain Saguaro Forest

What attracted them was the natural springs and abundance of wild game. These, combined, allowed the Hohokam to become accomplished farmers and hunters.

The land had no road access until 1870, when a military road was built to connect Fort McDowell and Fort Whipple. Not long after, miners began to arrive in the area, creating the first recognized gold mine called the Continental.

Jump ahead to 1986 – Lyle Anderson had an idea for what would be Desert Mountain. He teamed up with Frank Lloyd Wright’s Talesin School of Architecture to develop what is now an 8,000 acre master-planned community.

Anderson’s magnificent vision turned into a top tier golf community that is known for its luxurious homes, amenities, fitness facilities and clubhouses.
