When Covid-19 struck and the worldwide pandemic started in March, 2019, Desert Mountain went into crisis management mode like every other business in America. Ultimately, 2020 ended up being one of the most successful years in the club’s history. Not a single employee was furloughed, club revenues went up and membership sales went through the roof. A total of 177 Golf memberships were sold, which was a club record. 2020 was also the first time that Desert Mountain was ranked as a Top 15 Private Country Club in America, by the Platinum Clubs of America, and #1 in Arizona.

The State of Arizona allowed all golf courses to remain open so members continued to enjoy playing golf throughout the pandemic. Total rounds of golf played in 2020 increased by 29% over 2019. Desert Mountain courses were a welcome relief to members seeking to get outdoors in the fresh air. A full-time Outdoor Adventures Coordinator was hired to increase overall opportunities for outdoor recreation. The private hiking trails were extremely popular with members seeking a socially distant way to exercise outdoors. Horseback rides and lessons also increased 92% over 2019.

During the state mandated lockdown and limitations, the club provided virtual events, started new programs, and created memorable experiences while adhering to safety protocols. The Sonoran Fitness Center was closed down for 117 days due to state mandates. The club started 15 new outdoor fitness classes as a result. Another popular new program was the virtual cooking classes. All ingredients were delivered to members’ homes and helped members feel connected. The restaurants continued to provide high quality dining throughout the pandemic. The number of take-out meals from the club restaurants increased by 275% over 2019.

Overall Desert Mountain thrived during the pandemic. The club emerged from the pandemic financially stronger while protecting the jobs and livelihood of the valued employees. It was a great place to wait out the pandemic, with a wide variety of outdoor activities. It provided an exceptional lifestyle, during the most difficult circumstances.
