Do I Really Need to Pay a Desert Mountain Speeding Ticket?

June 2, 2011 by Carmen Brodeur

The Desert Mountain Security Patrol is at it again. It seems like every time I drive down Desert Mountain Parkway I see them pulling over cars and handing out tickets to drivers. The two most common reasons appear to be speeding or not coming to a complete stop at the Desert Mountain Parkway – Desert Hills Drive four way stop. So the question becomes – Do you really need to pay these tickets?

The Desert Mountain Security Patrol gives tickets on behalf of the Desert Mountain Master Association. So the ticket is really from the HOA. Officially it is called a “Uniform Safety Violation Notice” and they fine you $100 each time. The Security Patrol officer will ask you for your name, drivers license and whether you are a member. If you are a resident and do not pay, your Easy tag privileges are suspended and the fine goes directly on your HOA bill. If you are NOT a resident of Desert Mountain, they will ask who you are visiting in the community. The name of whichever Desert Mountain resident you say you were visiting goes on the ticket. If you are not a resident and you do not pay,  the fine goes on that friend’s HOA bill. Is that fair? Definitely not for your friend.

The road in Desert Mountain are private property, not public roads. So the tickets do not affect your vehicle insurance and is not reported to officials outside of Desert Mountain.  You have the right to an appeal within 15 days at the Covenants Committee of Desert Mountain to dispute the ticket.

What do you think? Would you pay a ticket? Would you even bother stopping if the Security Patrol tried to pull you over? Some people say they would just keep driving and head for the gate. Once you go through the gate the Security Patrol can’t touch you.
