This week, Desert Mountain Golf Club will be hosting the 2014 Southwestern Amateur golf tournament. Top amateur golfers will compete in a 72-hole stroke-play format in order to earn the coveted title of Southwestern Amateur Champion. The event will be held on the Cochise course 
from June 4th through the 7th.
For participants, the 99th Annual Southwestern Amateur tournament will be scheduled as follows:
- Rounds 1 and 2 will be played on Wednesday, June 4th and Thursday, June 5th with lunch provided both days. After 36-holes, the top 60 players and ties with the lowest scores will continue to the next rounds.
- Players who don’t make the 36-hole cut will be granted access to two other Jack Nicklaus courses at Desert Mountain for Friday and Saturday.
- Rounds 3 and 4 will be played on Friday, June 6th and Saturday, June 7th. The awards ceremony will take place at 2 p.m. immediately following play on Saturday.
The Southwestern Amateur is the longest running annual men’s amateur competition in the Southwest. The tournament began in 1915 as a way to promote golf in the amateur communities in the region. It has since become one of the highest ranked amateur events and has helped kick-start many PGA pros’ careers.
Having grown in popularity since its inception, the Southwestern Amateur has become an exclusive event. Many participants are invited to compete, though players are encouraged to apply if they weren’t invited. In recent years, the field has included as many as 200 players or more.
Desert Mountain Golf Club is a prestigious private community in North Scottsdale and home to six championship golf courses designed by Jack Nicklaus. Desert Mountain will continue to host the Southwestern Amateur through 2016.
