Several people have asked me why the Desert Mountain HOA would want to change the rental rules so drastically. As I discussed in my last blog, the Desert Mountain HOA has proposed new rules for all rentals in Desert Mountain. There was significant backlash to the proposal and it has been tabled until October. There will be a vote of the membership this fall.
It seems like a big jump from having no rental rules to restricting rentals to only members (or property owners) with a 60 day minimum. I agree that the proposed rules are extremely restrictive. The HOA has said that they want to institute the change for the “good of the community”. It is a vague, politically correct response.
I believe the real reason that they want to restrict rentals is to reduce the abuse of memberships at the golf courses by tenants. Currently there is a photo verification system in place at the Sonoran Clubhouse. However there is no photo verification system at the golf courses. The rumor is that many landlords simply give tenants their membership number and let them play the courses. As long as they have the number there is really nothing preventing them from using the golf courses. The HOA wants to keep non-member tenants off the courses and prevent them from using the facilities. The new rental rules would prevent this by only allowing rentals to members (or property owners).
