There’s no better place to enjoy a round of golf than on the picturesque golf courses of North Scottsdale. The weather’s ideal, the sunsets are breathtaking and the cacti are beautiful – but try to stay away from the cacti. Most cactus plants mind their own business; the jumping cholla is a different story. It has been called the most dangerous cactus in the desert.
A golfer at the Ancala Country Club had an unfortunate run in with a jumping cholla cactus this week. During a wind gust, he was suddenly covered in cactus needles. Paramedics needed to rush to the golf course to assist him. The jumping cholla breaks off thorny branches in the wind. When the branches are released they bounce on the ground wildly or fly through the air. The good news is, the jumping cholla plant is pretty easy to identify and, therefore, pretty easy to avoid.
Golfers at Desert Mountain can relax knowing that the staff are well aware of the jumping cholla and its capabilities. They try their best to ensure that none of the plants are located in areas where golfers might wander.
