Desert Mountain has a wide variety of amenities and activities available to residents. While Desert Mountain is renowned as a golfer’s paradise, it is also home to many outdoor enthusiasts. The mountainous landscape of the high Sonoran Desert is what attracts so many nature lovers to the community. Desert Mountain boasts a diverse network of trails designed to suit hikers of all skill levels, as well as mountain bikers and equestrians.
There are numerous trails that can be accessed from the Ranch trailhead. These range in difficulty from easy to advanced, so it is important to know which trails are best suited to your ability.
The Apache Skyline Trail is a challenging 5-mile loop for advanced hikers. It circles the northern properties of Desert Mountain and is at the highest elevation. If you choose to do this hike, make sure to bring plenty of water and expect to spend several hours on the trail.
The Tonto Ridge Overlook Trail is designed for experienced hikers as well. It is 2.2 miles with high elevations and offers stellar views of the Tonto National Forest. It can take up to 3 hours to complete this hike.
The Sunset Summit Trail is an intermediate loop that totals 2.8 miles. This hike can be completed within an hour.
The China Wall Trail connects to the Sunset Summit Trail and adds a challenging 1.25 miles to the hike. It may take an additional 30-45 minutes to complete your hike, but you will be rewarded with breathtaking views of the distant mountains.
The Hohokam Camp Trail is a fairly easy 2.5 mile loop from which you can view the Tucson Catalina Mountains. It offers a gradual incline throughout and plenty of picturesque scenery.
The Grapevine Wash Trail is a quick and easy trail for casual hikers. It can be hiked as an out-and-back or a loop using the Hohokam Camp Trail and Sunset Summit Trail on the return. The trail itself is 1.8 miles.
It is important to observe common safety guidelines when hiking Desert Mountain. Drink plenty of water, hike with a buddy and be mindful of the wildlife in the area.
