What Makes the Clay Tennis Courts So Soft?

June 7, 2009 by Carmen Brodeur

The Desert Mountain Tennis Center is an exceptional facility, with grass, clay and hard courts. It is very rare for a tennis center in Arizona to offer all 3 court surfaces within the same facility.

Clients are usually very impressed by the grass stadium court and show less enthusiasm for the clay courts. Frankly, the clay courts look gray, dull and odd. You can even see foot prints in the court surface. But that is exactly why I think the clay courts are so impressive.

The clay Har-Tru courts use a hydro court system which is essentially a clay tennis court on top of a controlled water reservoir. The water under the court, allows evaporation and capillary action to provide water to the playing surface evenly. How neat is that? The clay courts provide a softer playing surface. So although they aren’t as pretty as the grass courts, they are extremely popular with Desert Mountain members. If you haven’t played on this type of court, you should try it.

Desert Highlands is the only other club in Scottsdale that has all 3 types of courts. I would be happy to show you homes in both clubs. I specialize in selling homes throughout Scottsdale and can show you the differences between the clubs.
