The Desert Mountain Membership upcoming assessment in January for the turnover of the club to the members is predicted to be approximately $15,000. This is the figure that has been published by Desert Mountain Properties in their annual publication. You can read the entire publication, as well as other information about the Club, on our Desert Mountain Downloads Page. I predict that in the end, the assessment will actually be less than the $15,000 estimate, but only time will tell. Each Desert Mountain Club Member will receive a bill for that amount in early 2011.
I personally feel that there should be an exception for new members. There are many people who are waiting on the sidelines and will not purchase a home or membership in Desert Mountain until the turnover occurs. They simply do not want to pay this additional amount soon after joining the club.
The Mirabel Golf Club, which is located directly across from Desert Mountain, is going through a similar situation. They just turned over their club to the members in October and now face an assessment. Each member is being asked to pay a $5000 assessment to pay off the debt of the Club accrued during the turnover, as well as a $2500 operating expense assessment. Mirabel, however, is doing it the right way, in my opinion. All new members, who purchase after July 2nd, will not be subject to the assessment. This exception is an excellent idea. The Club is much more likely to continue to sell memberships briskly. It ultimately will make the Club more financially healthy.

Although I am not from your area, I do live in an area with many golf courses/private clubs. Personally I think exemptions CAN work if it provides enough incentive to dramatically increase enrollment (but if poorly executed, it results in a few new members getting discounted membership with no long-term gain for the club). Good post, I’ll be subscribing, Carmen.
Carmen,
