Desert Mountain Parkway Replacement Planned for 2020

Desert Mountain has spent $2 million on the maintenance of the Desert Mountain Parkway this year. The work done on the Parkway consisted of crack fill, seal coats, chip seals and slurry seals.Desert Mountain Sky

The Association has been planning and preparing for a total replacement of the Parkway in 2020. The estimated cost of construction could potentially total $6 million. In order to prepare for the replacement, the Landscape and Infrastructure Committee created a Streets Committee to analyze and consider what needs to be done to the Parkway and how it can be accomplished.

The goal of the Committee is to also discover, with the help of engineers and consultants, the best method to ensure as lengthy a life as possible for the new road.

While roadwork such as this poses an inconvenience to owners and their guests, it is necessary to add to the longevity of the road system, which typically have a useful life of 25-30 years.

Wildlife at Desert Mountain

While driving in Saguaro Forest the other day I saw a family of deer. This isn’t uncommon but I was reminded yet again about how much beautiful wildlife there is in Desert Mountain. Deer, javelinas, coyotes, and bunnies are seen regularly around Desert Mountain. An occasional mountain lion will even wander out of the Continental Mountains onto the Chiricahua golf course.

Deer in Desert Mountain

As tempting as it may be to sneak a wild animal a snack, please don’t feed the wildlife at Desert Mountain. Feeding wildlife, whether accidental or on purpose, always does more harm than good. There are a number of reasons why this is the case.

For one, the nutrients found in “human” food can cause serious health problems. The animals also may loose their natural fear of humans. Providing food within your community can invite large and potentially dangerous animals to become too comfortable in residential and recreational areas. Even smaller animals can congregate and create a nuisance, or even a safety risk.

Additionally, animals that gather for food handouts can stress the delicate ecosystem in that area and deplete the natural food supply. Disease is also a major concern. The closer in proximity animals are to each other, the greater the risk that disease will be spread among them. Epidemics can result in humans and pets suffering the consequences.

By leaving food out for wild animals or improperly sealing trashcans, animals can inadvertently cause significant property damage and become “unwelcome house guests” as they search for more goodies.

Loving animals means respecting their natural ecosystems and giving them space. Always enjoy wildlife at a distance and never feed them!
